CBD/UNFF Workshop on forest and biological diversity, Accra, Ghana
(February 11, 2002)

I had a chance to attend this workshop held in Accra, Ghana, from 28 to 30 January.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
is preparing to formulate "Program of Work on forest biological diversity" at its COP6 to be held in this April, in Hargue.

The main objectives of the workshop were:

(i) to share experiences and facilitating synergy between the CBD draft Program of Work on forest biological diversity and the UNFF Multi-Year Program of Work and Plan of Action; and

(ii) to consider ways and means for integrating conservation and sustainable use of forests into various national policies beyond the conservation and forestry sectors.

About 50 experts from 12 countries, international organizations, and NGOs attended the meeting, and some recommendations were compiled.

I took this occasion to present Japanese recent policy development in the context of biological diversity.
